Refused by cops, Rape victim ends life

A minor girl committed suicide at Tatibandh area of state capital after cops allegedly refused to lodge complaint against rape accused on Saturday morning.

“They asked us ‘proof of the rape and for her age certificate,” said her father, claiming that she was extremely upset after the police did not file the complaint.

The girl, according to her parents, had gone missing ever since her neighbor Poonam took her with a promise to get her a job. After returning home, a day later, she told her parents that she was sold off at Rs 5,000 to an unidentified man, who raped her.

However she managed to escape. Her family approached the Amanaka police station in Raipur on Friday, but the police allegedly turned them away.

On Saturday, according to her parents, after having consumed poison, the girl allegedly jumped from first floor of her house. The girl, who lay in a pool of blood, was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Blaming cops for negligence on their part in lodging the complaint, at least 350 people gheraoed the police station on Saturday.

The deceased girl’s family alleged that they had reported the missing matter to police the day she went missing, but a constable at the police station refused to lodge missing person’s report.

Police, however, said the girl’s father was asked to ‘wait’ for a day as it is quite common that young girls and boys elope and return home after a day or two.

Raipur SP BN Meena said, “Whether the girl was raped or poisoned will be ascertained only after the autopsy report.” Meena, however, refuted claims of the deceased being murdered. “Role of police’s negligence will be looked into,” added Meena.
