Recruitment of 23,000 cops soon, says: Home Minister

Hyderabad, August 12: The Home Minister, Ms P. Sabita Indra Reddy, has assured that the State government would finalise recruitment of remaining 23,000 police personnel soon to strengthen the department for discharge of their duties professionally and effectively to the satisfaction of the people.

Inaugurating the III Conference of Directors General of Police of Southern States, aimed at sharing intelligence and information pertaining to various category of offenders, who have got inter-state links and bring them to justice, at Jubille Hall here on Wednesday, she said that the State also reorganised the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of CID adding 17 new posts of IPS to strengthen the department.

The Home Minister said that the government would acquire 570 acres at a cost of Rs 34 crores for constructing a building for Commando Training Centre of OCTOPUS at Ibrahimpatnam. Out of 390 ranks in the OCTOPUS, 200 are commandos.

Admitting that the Left wing extremism problem was a socio-economic problem, she said that in addition to the existing force, the Remote and Interior Area Development (RIAD) Programme was taken up by the government and in the last six years it has ensured development of the interior areas enabling the people to enjoy fruits of development, who in turn, became partners in governance. She also disclosed that the State government will have a Cyber Academy in CID, which will take care of empowerment of police in handling cyber crime. The online frauds, banking frauds are taken seriously by the police department, she added.

The Home Minister said that there was need to break the Chennai-Bangalore based video piracy network to preclude producers from incurring huge losses. Like in Tamil Nadu, the State government was contemplating to bring video pirates under Andhra Pradesh Goonda Act. She said that the State government would develop zero tolerance to video piracy.

Stating that there were 2,678 colleges in the State, she said that the government had constituted Anti-Ragging Committees in 57% of the colleges. The overall ragging crime also has come down drastically due to preventive measures. Local police have been taking keen interest to ensure Zero Tolerance to ragging.

She suggested that the Andhra Pradesh join Nakabandi in the borders in a pre-determined date to spot out wanted criminals and hold half yearly meetings with SPs of border districts.

The conference has discussed issues pertaining to tackling left wing extremism, terrorism, video piracy, circulation of fake Indian currency notes, organized criminals’ networks dealing with narcotics and psychotropic substances, anti-human trafficking and immigration frauds. The next Southern DGPs conference would be held in Karnataka in August next.

The State DGP, Mr R R Girish Kumar, the Kerala DGP, Mr Jacob Punnoose, the Karnataka DGP CID, Dr D.V. Guru Prasad, the Tamil Nadu DGP, Ms TMT Latika Saran, and DGP Training, Mr S.T. Ramesh, were present.
