Hyderabad, November 10: A huge problem is staring the Congress in the face, threatening the party’s chances of winning the GHMC election.
There are as many as many as 472 rebels in the 150 divisions and they are in no mood to heed the directive of Pradesh Congress Committee chairman D Srinivas that they withdraw their nominations.
The party leadership is working overtime to address the problem but little headway has been made even as the “core committee’’ of the party entrusted with
the responsibilty of winning the election has reportedly thrown up its hands in despair.
Many rebels, party leaders acknowledge, are very popular and influential in their respective divisions and their remaining in the fray will spell doom for the
Congress’ hopes of bagging 100 divisions in the polls and bagging the mayor post.
The PCC president, after discussing the issue with chief minister K Rosaiah, decided to appoint leaders and ministers as election in-charges “to ensure there would be no split in the Congress vote’’ which could help the Opposition parties. Meanwhile, the PCC president’s pleas to the rebels to withdraw from the fray have so far fallen on deaf ears.
