Ready to counter ULFA’s effort to disrupt peace: Assam Police

The police has put in place strategies to counter any effort by the anti-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) to engage in subversive activities in the run-up to Independence Day.

Senior Superintendent of Police of Kamrup Metro Aditya Prakash Tiwari today said various measures including
surveillance, pickets and so on have been taken up to ensure that the militant groups are not able to disrupt peace in Guwahati.

We cannot rule out the possibility that militant groups may try to create some disturbance. We have prepared
strategies to counter any such effort,” Tiwari said here.

He added, “We are also coordinating with other security agencies. Our priority is to safeguard the common people.”

Tiwari said ULFA cadres are working closely with other militant groups like the Meghalaya-based Garo National
Liberation Army (GNLA).

The Assam police had earlier this week sounded a “general security alert” throughout the state in view of the
threat from the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA faction to engage in subversive activities before August 15.

Tiwari also said the city police has started a special drive against cars with tinted windows, as per the recent
Supreme Court direction.

“We have achieved worthwhile success and in coming days we will intensify efforts in this regard,” he said.
