The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has banned a bread manufacturer for the next three years, after a rat jumped out of a sealed bread packet, in the premier hospital.
“The rat was found inside the sealed packet of Brown-Hi Fibre bread, manufactured by Messers Bonn Nutrients. The medical institute has now banned the bread maker for a period of three years,’’ said a senior AIIMS official.
Bonn Nutrients produces food products such as breads, biscuits, cakes, and cookies, which are sold in domestic, as well as international markets.
The said incident had occurred in the month of July, this year, for which a report had been filed by the institute on 24 September. The bread manufacturer has since been barred from supplying products to the hospital for a period of three years.
The bread is served to patients admitted in various wards of the hospital, including those who have undergone surgery, along with patients suffering from severe infections.
According to doctors, consumption of rodent-infected food could lead to allergy, fever, diarrhoea; it could also lead to more serious health issues like infections in the blood, and meningitis.
“The company failed in keeping ‘Good Manufacturing Practices’ and its quality wing failed to detect such an incident before the supplies were sent,” said the notice issued by AIIMS.
The company hasn’t responded despite several attempts to get a reaction on this latest development.
