Rare male Pakistan ‘honour killing’: Husband murdered by his In-laws

MULTAN: Honor killing is an ancient practice in Pakistan in which men kill female relatives in the name of family honor. Thousands of Pakistani women and girls are killed every year by husbands, fathers or brothers who believe that they have brought them dishonor by being unfaithful

But in a rare case a victim is a man whose throat was slit by relatives of his wife in Multan who disapproved of their marriage in the latest “honour killing”.

Muhammad Irshad, 43, married Mussarat Bibi, the daughter of a rich local agricultural family, about an year ago and fled as he feared his in-laws would kill him, but he had returned to see his parents. When Mussarat Bibi’s family came to know about his arrival his father-in-law and two brothers in-law attacked Irshad at a marketplace in the Punjab city of Burewala on Friday.

District police chief Ghazi Salahuddin said. “The assailants were armed with knives and hatchets and after inflicting several wounds on Irshad’s body they slit his throat.”

He added. A manhunt had been launched to find Irshad’s in-laws, who remained at large.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. Recently a father in the eastern city of Lahore, the capital of Punjab, killed his daughter and her husband because he disapproved of their marriage.

Last month, a 16-year-old girl accused of helping a young couple elope was killed and her body set on fire, in a case that again brought the into the national spotlight.

Last year, more than 500 men and women were murdered in such, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Shareef has praised an Oscar winning film. “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” which tells the story of a rare survivor of an attempted honour killing.

PM Nawaz had vowed to eradicate the “evil” of honour killings but no progress has been made since then.
