Washington, January 26: Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has been condemned for his stark comments. He claimed that rape victims who become pregnant should “make the best of a bad situation”.
The candidate made an extremely poor attempt at explaining his opposition to abortion, especially in rape cases, reported Herald Sun.
When CNN’s Piers Morgan asked him what he would do if his own daughter begged him for an abortion after having been raped, Santorum responded: ‘This is not an easy choice, I understand that. As horrible as the way that that son or daughter and son was created, it still is her child.
‘And whether she has that child or she doesn’t, it will always be her child, and she will always know that,’ Santorum said.
Santorum is ultra conservative and a devout Catholic who has in the past spoken of how he wants to ban abortion with a constitutional amendment.
Pro-choice commentators have said that he had only managed to add to the trauma of what a rape victim goes through, said Daily Mail.
Santorum, 53, has seven children with wife Karen, 51.
The Republican candidate also defended his support of the death penalty.
