Dehradoon, July 08: Even as the Uttarakhand government was yet to recommend a CBI probe into the alleged fake encounter case involving Dehradun Police officials, the state police have been doing all to show that they were investigating it transparently.
According to Dehradun Superintendent of Police Abhinav Kumar, all help was being given to the crime branch team of Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID) that has been investigating the case. The documents that the CB-CID required were being shared and all the inconsistencies mentioned in the documents were being investigated.
Inconsistencies, especially about the use of firearm in shooting 24-year-old Ranveer Singh, were found in the statements of the 14 police officers and men who have been booked for his murder. While one police officer claimed he had lost his gun prior to the shooting, it was his weapon that was found to have fired at least nine bullets at the MBA student from Ghaziabad.
The Dehradun SP said the police went through their records thoroughly but could not find any criminal record in the state against the deceased.
The SP said, “CB-CID is trying to gather documentary evidence in the case. We have shared all the relevant documents with them. We will investigate if there are any inconsistencies mentioned in these documents relating to the encounter.”
“Till now we have not come across any criminal cases against Ranveer Singh, who was killed in the encounter,” he added.
Agreeing with the victim’s kin, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had on Tuesday insisted on a CBI probe into the case. Though Chief Minister Ramesh Pokriyal Nishank indicated that he had no objections to a CBI probe, the state government was yet to recommend the case to be handed over to the CBI.
