Hyderabad, April 23: More than 9,800 IIT aspirants appeared for the entrance test conducted by the Ramaiah Coaching Institute at six different centres in the city. The High Court Judge, Justice L. Narasimha Reddy, was the chief guest.
Justice Reddy visited the centre at the PG Ram Reddy Centre for Distance Education, OU, along with Mr. Chukka Ramaiah, MLC, and spoke to a few students on the conduct of the exam and quality of the question paper. He said awareness of IIT among the people was very high, thanks to the achievements of the State’s students and trainers like Mr. Ramaiah. Later, he released a book – Shaishava Geetham – a collection of articles written by Mr. Ramaiah on the education system and issues surrounding the students. The book has been compiled by Juluri Gowri Shanker, a well-known poet.
Justice Reddy said that the values imparted through the age-old gurukul system have been strong and persons such as Mr. Ramaiah had strengthened such a system. He said the book will be a guide to students and also to parents to understand the process of their children’s education.
Mr. Ramaiah said aspirants had come from all the districts of the State apart from a few neighbouring States. Students from North Indian States also took the test, which is an interesting development. The presence of a large number of girls among those who took the test was heartening, he said. This year, the paper was designed on the lines of the changed IIT-JEE pattern that gave more confidence to aspirants to attempt the test even without coaching. “The IIT-JEE pattern was changed to make it accessible to people from rural areas and those coming from the downtrodden sections. We adopted similar method,” he said. Mr. Ramaiah said this year an additional 25 students would be admitted from Backward Classes taking the total to 175 admissions. In the general category, 125 students are admitted of which 25 are reserved for students from rural areas. Another 25 seats are already reserved for students from SC and ST categories.
