Hyderabad: #Sisters4Change campaign initiated in connection with Raksha Bandhan by Nizamabad MP K.Kavitha has gained momentum with the festival fast approaching.
On Friday, Osmania University students kicked off a bike rally touring the districts of Telangana and reach Mancherial where girl students participated in a big number to promote the cause. The university students were welcomed by members of Telangana Jagruthi, an NGO run by Kavitha.
The campaign urges sisters to gift a helmet to their brothers on Raksha Bandhan, as thousands of lives are lost every year in two-wheeler accidents, a major cause being not wearing helmets.
The Parliamentarian started the movement last year and continued the #GiftAHelmet campaign this year too, which garnered support from noted Tollywood actor Mahesh Babu, who shared a video message stressing the need on bikers using helmets. While, Television anchor Suma Kanakala termed the initiative a beautiful one, film director VV Vinayak promoted this call through a video message.
In Hyderabad, Anjani Kumar, Commissioner of Police extended his support by flagging off a rally organised by Telangana Jagruthi and gifted helmets to the bike riders.
Earlier, Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to Telangana, flagged off a awareness rally in Nizamabad, “I passionately support the call,” he said.
Kieran Drake, Head of Politics and Press, British High Commission in India, also participated in the rally and said, “So important that all men, women and children on two-wheelers wear helmets to reduce the current fatality rates”.
