Raju to stay put in Nims

Hyderabad, September 10: Ramalinga Raju wouldn’t be leaving the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) any time soon. If the treatment calendar sketched by
doctors is any indication, the ex-Satyam boss could be in for a minimum of two to three months stay. This, in turn, will hit the investigation into the Rs 7000-cr Satyam scam.

Doctors said that there was an “urgent need” to start the treatment for Raju’s Hepatitis C this alone requires a month-long stay but even this will begin only after he is treated for his heart condition.

Raju was admitted on Monday evening for “chest pain” and doctors had then said he would have to stay for a “few days”. However, the stay now seems to be prolonging. In the past two days Raju has undergone a series of tests, including ECG and ECO, Nims cardiology HoD Dr D Sheshagiri Rao said. He is also slated to undergo an angiogram “after his condition stabilises”.

“If the blocks in his arteries are found to be critical he may need to undergo stenting,” a doctor said. As for his Hepatitis C, Nims gastroenterology gave the Satyam scamster only 50 per cent recovery chance. The treatment itself could take a year. “The treatment can only begin four to six weeks after his heart problem is treated and he completely recovers,” gastroenterology HoD Dr Ajit Kumar said.

Dr Ajit said in Hepatitis C cases patients turn critical 10 to 15 years after getting the infection when chances of liver cancer increase. “In some people, the situation may arise early as well,” he said. Raju has been suffering from the disease for the past eight years and Dr Ajit said that his treatment should start at the earliest.
