The present-day development model is highly energy intensive and calls for excessive consumption of fossil fuels, which has endangered the environment and ecological balance with disastrous consequences to natural resources. It is presumed that before the end of this millennium, the world will run out of all its conventional sources of energy.
Against the above back drop, Renewable Energy Sources of Energy have attracted global attention and evoked interest among the planners, policy makers and environmental activists. Renewable Energy, which appeared to be mere bright ideas, few years ago, may be the only solution in the future.
In order to create mass awareness on Renewable Energy programs, Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has decided that August 20 in every year, the birth day of late Prime Minister will be celebrated as “Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas” (Renewable Energy Day) in remembrance of Rajiv Gandhi on his vision of taking the country into 21st century through application of modern science and technology.
On the occasion of “Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas” (Renewable Energy Day), a function is being organized on August 28, 2012 from 9 am at Ravindra Bharathi.
In order to crate awareness on Renewable Energy Sources, essay and painting competitions to the school children were organized on August 23 at Jawahar Bala Bhawan, Public Gardens, Hyderabad. The competitions have evoked good response among the younger generation and some 500 students participated in the competitions. Awards and certificates will be given to the winners on August 28.
Further, debate competitions for Engineering college students of Hyderabad and surrounding areas on the topic of Renewable Energy Sources have been conducted on August 21, 2012 at Osmania University College of Engineering. The event was jointly organized by Osmania University College of Engineering and NREDCAP. The winners will be awarded with prizes and certificates during the function being held on August 28.(NSS)
