Rajasthan Speaker lauds bio-metric system

Hyderabad, September 13: The Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Deependra Singh Shekhavath has appreciated the functioning of bio-metric system through which payments are made to the workers for works done under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

He was leading a team of legislators visiting the State to inspect the implementation of NREGS and payments given to the workers in the State. They visited Adloor village in Kamareddy mandal, Lingampet mandal headquarter and Kolpol village in the mandal and Bhavanipet village in Yellareddy mandal on Saturday.

The legislators learnt the details during the interaction with the locals and local authorities. At Kamareddy the Head Post-master Usha Chandrasekhar, explained how the details regarding the workers were fed into computers and the withdrawal of money through bio-metric system. Chandravva, Rajia and Lakshman of Adloor village apprised the team that they were engaged for desiltation of tanks, strengthening tank bunds and other soil works and getting Rs.100 daily.

“We are carrying out the works with ten members as one team. We get the payment within two to three weeks after the work is done,” they said adding that facilities like drinking water were provided by the authorities at the place of work. At Kolpol village in a meeting with women the functioning of bio-metric system was displayed by the officials. The legislators were impressed when the illiterate women drew the money by putting thumb impression.

They came to know that out of 505 job cards issued in the village 363 households were getting employment and so far 20,000 man days were created in the village.

Mr. Deependra Singh Shekhavath said after going back to his State he would submit a report to the government on the implementation of the NREGS and bio-metric system in Andhra Pradesh. He was of the opinion that in Andhra Pradesh Information Technology was being used effectively.

Welcoming the Speaker and his team district Collector K. Sunitha earlier explained that over 2.28 lakh people were benefiting under the scheme in the district. However, 4.91 lakh people opened bank accounts expressing their willingness to work, she said.
