Rajasthan polls witnesses record turnout of 74.38 percent

The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday said that polls in Rajasthan witnessed a voter turnout of 74.38 percent in 199 constituencies, and added that the voter turnout was much higher than the previous historic high during 2003 assembly elections.

“As per the latest reports that we have, voter turnout has been 74.38 percent as of 5 pm. Reports from some districts are still awaited; the figure is likely to go up. This is much higher than the previous historic high, which is 2003 assembly elections, when voter turnout was 67.18 percent.

The voter turnout during 2008 assembly elections was 66.49 percent,” Deputy Election Commissioner Sudhir Tripathi told media here today. “Total number of constituencies was 200. However today we had polling for 199 constituencies.

In Churu, the polls have been adjourned due to the death of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate post nomination, and their polling will take place on December 13,” he added. He further said that the polling process was very peaceful barring stray incidents in few districts. “Polling was peaceful barring stray incidents. In Dausa district, two rounds fired in air by the security staff deployed to disperse mob trying to disturb the poll.

Polling, however, continued. In Alwar District, RPF security force deployed on duty fired in air to disperse mob,’ he said. The results of the Rajasthan elections, along with those in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Delhi, will be declared on December 8. (ANI)
