Rajahmundry Dy Mayor booked for dowry harassment

East Godavari, May 11: Dowleshwaram police on Tuesday registered a case against Rajahmundry Deputy Mayor B Satyanarayana Prasad after his wife alleged that she was subjected to domestic violence and harassed by him and his family for additional dowry.

According to Rajahmundry Rural Inspector Ambika Prasad, Sujatha Chowdary (40), along with media persons, approached the police with a complaint against her husband, his brother Gopi and his wife Durga used to manhandle her.

Sujatha also alleged that they demanded that she bring additional dowry from her parents. She had got married 15 years ago.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 498 (A), 506, 34 of Indian Penal Code and 3, 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act 1961.

Meanwhile, some women’s welfare organisations rushed to her help and expressed solidarity with Sujatha. Some of the activists expressed fears that the police might hush up the case as the Deputy Mayor is close to Telugu Desam Party leader Gorantla Buchaiah Chowdry.
