Rain takes Hyderabadis by surprise

Hyderabad, May 02: It was pleasant evening for Hyderabadis who, after reeling under heat wave conditions for the few days, got respite with light thundershowers occurring in many places in the twin cities.

Even as the day temperature was reported around 39 degrees Celsius, at around 5.30 pm, rain accompanied with strong winds brought the heat down. Heavy winds uprooted trees, one of which fell on an electric pole, causing power cuts.

It is reported that the rainfall in the twin cities during the 24 hours ending 7.30 p.m. was 15 mm. The Meteorological department official, however, predicted that cumulonimbus clouds were formed over Telangana region and they were moving actively. A vigorous upper air trough also prevailed. Under its influence, isolated rains would occur in many places in the twin cities in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, thundershowers and winds occurred in Chandrayangutta, Malakpet, Hayatnagar, Dilshuknagar, Vanasthalipuram, Vidyanagar and Amberpet. Traffic came to standstill at the Doordarshan towers in Malakpet for a couple of hours as a massive tree which was uprooted fell on the middle of the main road.

Besides, power interruption took place in numerous localities. A few advertisement hoardings set up on buildings also fell down.

Vehicle riders had a tough time with rain water in drainages flowing out on streets.
