Rain-soaked wall collapses on house

Hyderabad, September 22: A rain-soaked wall collapsed on a tin-roofed house at Banjara Hills on Tuesday, killing a woman and injuring three others. Among the injured is an eight-month-old baby who is battling for life.

Around 3.30 p.m, a 20 feet compound wall of an open place in Singadikunta locality on Banjara Hills road no 10 crashed after heavy rains lashed the city. The rubble fell on a tin roof of an adjacent house which collapsed.

A family which had migrated from Anantapur was living in the house. According to police, M Anjaneyulu, his wife Lakshmi and three children were living there. The couple had moved to the city seven months ago in search of livelihood and were doing labour work at construction sites. Three months ago, Anjaneyulu’s brother, Govindu’s family also shifted to the city and were living in a house adjacent to Anjaneyulu’s house. On Tuesday evening, the roof caved in when Lakshmi (26), her son Venkatesh (7) and Govindu’s eight-month-old baby Swati were asleep in the house.

Locals swung into action, clearing the debris and initially removed Lakshmi from the rubble. She was dead by then. They later pulled out Venkatesh and Swati from the debris. Though initially the locals suspected that Swati had also died, another person, however, gave her artificial respiration to bring her back to consciousness. She was shifted to the Niloufer Hospital with severe injuries.

Anjaneyulu was away from the city when the incident took place while Govindu and his wife had gone to work. The remaining children of the two families had a lucky escape as they had gone to school.
