Rain disrupts normal life across AP

Hyderabad, August 28: Normal life came to a standstill in several parts of Andhra Pradesh due to the incessant heavy rains during the last three days.

Several of low-lying areas in Telangana and coastal Andhra districts are facing the threat of inundation due to continuous rains. At least 10 rain-related deaths have been reported from different parts of the state in the last one week. Heavy rains have also inundated thousands of acres of agricultural fields.

The Irrigation projects, including Sri Ram Sagar project (SRSP), Nizamsagar, Pocharam, Koulasnala and Singeetham are receiving huge inflows. The gates of SRSP are likely to be opened to release the water due to increasing flows. Presently, the water levels in the SRSP are about 80 TMC and it is getting inflows of 1.16 lakh cusecs.

In view of these heavy inflows, the SRSP gates might be opened, said Executive Engineer Rajeshwar Reddy, adding that a warning has already been issued to the people in low lying areas which might get affected after the release of water. Heavy rains have also snapped the road connectivity to several villages in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Guntur, Krishna, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari districts.

The department said isolated heavy rain would occur in the districts of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar,Warangal and Khammam of Telangana and in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari of Coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 48 hours.

According to the Met Department, the southwest monsoon has been vigorous over Telangana and coastal Andhra. Under its influence, moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers would occur at most places in both the regions. The department has also predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places over Rayalaseema.

Hyderabad too would witness rain or thundershowers. The Maximum and Minimum temperatures would be around 28 and 21 degrees Celsius respectively.

Heavy rainfall has been recorded at many places in the state on Saturday. While the Navipet of Nizamabad received the maximum of 12 cm of rainfall, Armoor got 11 cm of rainfall followed by Nizamabad which got 8 cm of rains. Banswada, Bheemgal and Bodhan in Nizamabad, Chintapalli in Visakhapatnam, Mudhol and Sirpur in Adilabad district, Ramayampet in Medak and Vizianagaram received 7 cm of rainfall each.
