Rain deluges Pakistan’s largest city, killing 15

Karachi, July 20: Officials say rainfall in Pakistan’s largest city has killed at least 15 people and cut off electricity.

Pakistan’s chief meteorologist Qamaruz Zaman says nearly 15 cm (5.91 inches) of rain was recorded in Karachi.

Karachi is a city of more than 16 million and Pakistan’s commercial capital. It also has an aged infrastructure and a poor drainage system, making it difficult to manage what might be tolerable rainfall elsewhere.

Qamar Pervez of the Edhi ambulance service said at least 15 bodies were found. Some died due to collapsing walls in homes, others were electrocuted.

he Karachi Electric Supply Company said the city’s power was disconnected from the national grid, leaving it in darkness.
