Railways strikes deal with states for passenger security

New Delhi, January 23: The Union railway ministry is coordinating with state governments to ensure better security for train passengers. This is likely to ensure that passengers are not harassed by gangs or are not robbed and drugged in trains and stations.

To firm up security, the ministry and the state governments will nominate an inter-state police team to prevent crimes and investigate those that occur.

This decision was taken at a meeting chaired by AK Goyal, member (staff), railway board, in Delhi on Wednesday.

“When trains pass through more than one state, the state with the maximum run [where the train has travelled longest] will be designated the co-ordinating state of that train,” said Goyal.

“There will be special drives to bust organised gangs. A better system will be evolved to share intelligence on crimes. The railway ministry and the state government will work out some arrangement to secure under-construction railway projects,” said Goyal.

Wednesday’s meeting was attended by Railway Protection Force (RPF) director-general Ranjit Sinha, home secretaries of the states, the police officers in charge of railway security in states and officials from the home ministry and Intelligence Bureau.
