New Delhi, July 16: Railways has reported a sharp drop of over 11 per cent in earnings from transportation of pig iron and finished steel in June this year due to “slackness” in the market.
“The drop of 11.54 per cent was due to slackness in the market,” said a senior Railway Ministry official.
In June 2010, it earned Rs 265.81 crore as against Rs 300.47 crore during the same period last year.
Taking the quarter between April-June, the drop was 6.94 per cent, with its earnings standing at 781.27 crore as against Rs 839.52 crore earned during the same quarter last year, he said.
In all, Railways generated Rs 14,915.16 crore revenue earnings from freight traffic during April-June quarter as compared to Rs 13,768.56 crore it earned during the same period last year, thus registering a growth of 8.33 per cent.
