New Delhi, November 03: Railways might have slapped heavy penalties to discourage illegal crossing of rail tracks but that has not stopped people from committing such acts as was evident from today’s mishap near Gurgaon that claimed six lives.
Six persons, including a woman and a child, were killed and four others injured when the New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi Express hit them while they were crossing the track, triggering protests by locals who surrounded the train.
Railways have realised Rs 24.02 crore as penalty upto September this year from illegal crossers out of which Northern Railway alone have earned Rs 43.74 lakh as penalty but people seem to be oblivious of the risk associated with committing such acts.
“Despite our best efforts, Railways could do little to stop trespassing (into tracks) in busy places as the onus of not doing so rests completely with the public.
