Tambaram, Dec 29: Motormen, guards and station masters affiliated to different trade unions staged a protest at the Tambaram railway station, seeking action against a police constable who assaulted their colleague at the Chengalpattu railway station on Sunday evening. A First Information Report has been registered against the constable, K. Srinivasan.
The staff, belonging to Dakshin Railway Employees Union, Southern Railway Mazdoor Union, Southern Railway Employee Sangh and All India Loco Running Staff Association, staged the protest on Platform No. 1.
According to them, motorman K.Kumar (40) and guard Ramadas of a suburban EMU train (BC 53), after reaching Chengalpattu, entered a first-class compartment to have dinner.
They noticed a man trying to take out cash from the shirt pocket of a commuter sleeping inside the compartment. When Kumar pulled him up, the man entered into an argument and returned with a police lathi after a few minutes. He then kicked Kumar on his abdomen and also assaulted him with the lathi. Ramadas raised an alarm and cried for help, following which the man escaped.
Ramadas approached the personnel on duty at Government Railway Police Station in Chengalpattu who informed him that the assailant was their colleague.
Kumar was rushed to Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital and after first-aid, shifted to Perambur Railway Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Sources said Srinivasan, a constable attached to the GRP, Chengalpattu, was under the influence of alcohol. He was in civilian clothes and had caused a ruckus earlier at the police station, before assaulting the motorman.
