New Delhi, February 17: With barely a week left for the presentation of the Railway Budget, figures released today revealed that the PSU behemoth has registered over nine per cent growth in freight revenue this fiscal till January, generating Rs 47,283 crore.
“Railways earned Rs 47,238.72 crore during the 10 month period as compared to Rs 43,212.72 crore it generated during the corresponding period last year,” said an official statement, adding, the growth of 9.32 per cent.
During this period, it carried 730.96 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic as compared to 681.28 million tonnes it carried during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 7.29 per cent.
In January alone, it earned Rs 5091.89 crore, the bulk of the earnings coming from the transportation of coal, iron ore, cement, petroleum and oil lubricants and food grains among others, said a Railway official.
