Hyderabad, February 03: A railway engine rammed into an autorickshaw carrying nine passengers at an unmanned railway crossing near Devarakadra in Mahabubnagar district killing four and injuring f ive others.
A woman and a child were among the victims, police said.
The incident took place at an unmanned level crossing at Puttapally village in Devarakadra mandal today evening at around 5.30 p.m.
The auto driver reportedly did not notice the railway engine and went ahead to cross the tracks. The engine collided with the auto and dragged it for quite some distance throwing the occupants of the vehicle.
Among the deceased are a couple, Munaiah (43) and Munamma (38) hailing from Badvel in Kadapa district.
They were reportedly on their way to the village from Devarakadra after purchasing vegetables from a weekly market. Apart from the couple, their son, Chinna Jangaiah (7) and another person of Kaukuntal village were also killed in the mishap.
“Five others suffered severe injuries and were shifted to the government hospital at Mahabubnagar,’’ police said. The condition of two of them is said to be serious.
Meanwhile, the railway officials cleared the wreckage from the tracks and resumed trains services.
