Rahul to woo Tamil Nadu youths

New Delhi, September 02: After placing the party on revival path in Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi’s next stop seems to be Tamil Nadu where he is making efforts to give a new lease of life to the Congress by injecting ‘youth power’.

Highly-placed Congress sources said Rahul’s target among the southern states is Tamil Nadu which sends 39 members to the Lok Sabha. This, he plans, to do by giving preference to youth and holding organisational elections for the State Youth Congress, a move found useful in Punjab and Uttrakhand.

They said Rahul wants the youth Congress elections to be held very soon and has also planned to visit the state by the middle of this month to interact with party workers.

Currently, Congress is supporting the Karunanidhi Government from outside as demands by section of the state leaders for sharing of power have gone unheeded.

Significantly, Rahul had last week met noted Tamil actor Vijay and is understood to have expressed interest in using his popularity among the youth to strengthen the party.

There has been intense speculation about Vijay, who has a sizeable fan following, taking a plunge into politics and his discussions with Rahul has excited the party workers.

During his meeting with Vijay, Rahul discussed the current political situation in the southern state and got to know from him various activities being undertaken by his fan clubs across the state, the sources said. .
