Rahul likely to address public meetings in UP

Lucknow, April 27: Keen to make inroads into the Bundelkhand region, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is likely to hold public meetings there as part of the ongoing party yatra. “UPCC has requested Rahul Gandhi to participate in a public meeting in Bundelkhand and another in naxal-affected Sonebhadra or Mirzapur district during the yatra, before May 31,” Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi said today.

“A similar request would also be made to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for addressing meeting along with Rahul in the Bundelkhand region,” Joshi said, adding Congress president Sonia Gandhi would be requested to address a rally in Western UP. The Yatra, to commemorate the 125th year of Congress” foundation, was flagged off by Rahul Gandhi from Ambedkar Nagar on April 14, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar. Party sources said the response to the yatra has been very encouraging and it is generating interest among the people.

The party has deployed Dalit leaders including those who had been associated with the BSP in the past like Raj Bahadur and Balihari Babu to attack the state government, they said.
