Lucknow,December 25 : At the core of the tussle for schedule lie ten Rajya Sabha seats. The BSP wanted the elections to be held in April so that by virtue of its majority, it could get maximum members elected to the Upper House in the biennial poll which are due in March.
The Congress wanted an early election because hopes to form a government in UP in alliance with Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.
everything works according to the Congress’s plans, the party may be able to increase its strength in the Rajya Sabha where it is in minority.
It is also an opportune time to harvest the recent decision to introduce a sub- quota for Muslims in jobs and central educational institutions. After passing 4.5 % minority quota Rahul baba is targetting Maya. Intensefying his attack on Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Saturday exhorted voters to bring his party to power in the state for five years and renewed his promise to change the face of the state.
Addressing a rally in the Kasganj constituency of Etah district, the Gandhi scion expressed happiness at the swelling numbers of youth present to hear him speak. “ I am not repeating anything new… but I am surprised by the applause I am getting here. I can see that the number of the state’s youth at my rallies is increasing and this is a positive sign,” he said.
Bucking the trend of his recent speeches, Rahul did not attack the Samajwadi Party in the bastion of its supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. “ Unlike the leaders of other political parties, I very frequently go among the people. I accept that I have studied abroad but I have worked hard to gain vital information and knowledge by coming in your midst often,” he added.
Again training his guns on Mayawati, he quoted various instances of misappropriation of funds by the Bahujan Samaj Party ( BSP) and its ministers and leaders. “ I tell you once again that the youth and other people of this state have the potential of bringing employment and development to people from other parts of the country. But unlike in other Congressruled states, you are being kept from becoming the most developed state in the country,” he said.
Giving an example, Rahul said his foreign friends were familiar with the names of cities like Hyderabad and states like Andhra Pradesh only because these places had recorded a lot of development.
“ But when I mention to them names like Allahabad, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur and Uttar Pradesh, it draws a blank,” the Congress scion said.
Rahul also charged the BJP with playing on religious sentiments to strengthen its vote bank.
“ The ‘ India Shining’ slogan fell flat on its face in the previous elections. I only come to you because I want to share your knowledge and experience,” he claimed.
Speaking later at Kanshiram Nagar, Rahul slammed Mayawati for her reservations over the proposed food security Bill. He told an election meeting: “ Just like the NREGA, she has rejected the food Bill without giving it a proper thought.
But it ( the Bill) will ensure that no one remains hungry as every family will get 35 kg of foodgrains,” the Congress general secretary said.
