Agartala: Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has appointed Tripura royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarman as the state party President, sources said here on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old, who has been actively working for the Congress since 2008, replaced Birajit Sinha, a former Minister and five time legislator. Sinha was the Tripura Pradesh Congress President since January 2015.
Debbarman, whose father Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarman and mother Bibhu Kumari Devi were Lok Sabha members for several terms, told IANS that he would constitute several committees and a state body at the earliest in consultation with Gandhi and other Central and state leaders.
“I would try my best to further rejuvenate the party in Tripura in unity with all senior and young leaders and party workers,” he said over the phone from Guwahati, where Debbarman and other leaders of all northeastern states are slated to meet Gandhi.
The Congress chief is all set to kick-start his Lok Sabha poll campaign in the Northeast on Tuesday.
“During his day-long tour, Gandhi would address a public rally in Guwahati and would also hold a discussion with the Northeast Congress Coordination Committee (a forum of Congress leaders from the northeastern states),” Debbarman added.
