Rachchabanda a police programme, says Dattatreya

Hyderabad, January 29: The State BJP has demanded that the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, to prove his majority in the Assembly. The Chief Minister was trying to gain confidence of the people from the ongoing ‘Rachchabanda’ programme, he alleged.

Speaking to the media here on Friday, the former Union minister, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, said that the ‘Rachchabanda’ programme was not for the benefit of the people, but for the sake of gaining their confidence. He said that the people of Telangana were not showing interest in the Rachchabanda and more over opposing it. He charged the State government with conducting the programme with the help of police. He dubbed the Rachchabanda programme as purely a police programme.

Describing the arrests of BJP and TRS activists on Thursday night on the eve of the Chief Minister’s visit to Nalgonda district as an undemocratic act, Mr Dattatreya said that the government was reminding the people of the dreaded Emergency days now in the State. Stating that common people were not participating in the Rachchabanda programme, he said that only Congress workers were participating in it.

Finding fault with the government’s attitude in the Rachchabanda programme, the senior BJP leader said that instead of solving the problems of the people immediately as assured by the government, the officials were only giving assurances that they would examine the petitions.

He also condemned the Chief Minister’s threat that the funds of the villages where Rachchabanda was boycotted would be transferred to other villages. Transferring of funds of one village to another was unconstitutional, he said and warned that the government would have to face the results in future.

Alleging that the police department was working actively in the State than any other department under the control of the Governor; he made it clear that the police cannot stop the people’s wish and they cannot stop Telangana movement.

Mr Dattatreya opined that Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy was only a nominated Chief Minister and not people’s Chief Minister. He demanded that Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy respond to the challenge thrown by the loyalists of Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Mr Dattatreya also said that the Telugu Desam party chief, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu, has totally failed as Leader of Opposition. Describing the State government as a sinking ship, Mr Dattatreya said that the ruling and Opposition parties in the State were afraid of traveling in that ship. He stressed the need to save the State from political and constitutional crises. (NSS)
