Race for 6 Rajya Sabha seats begins

Hyderabad, February 01 (INN): Come March and six Rajya Sabha seats from Andhra Pradesh will fall vacant. Those who will be out of the august body after completing the regulatory six-year tenure will be Dr K Keshav Rao, Rashid Alvi, Dasari Narayan Rao, G Sanjiva Reddy; all from the Congress; Dr M Y Mysoora Reddy of Telugu Desam and Communist Party of India’s Aziz Pasha.

Hectic activity is being witnessed in the various political parties to get these seats filled. Keeping in view the present political equations in the present Assembly it is assumed that the ruling Congress will corner four seats while the opposition Telugu Desam will get two seats.

Congress MPs going out of the Parliament stand a slim chance of getting in. Rashid Alvi, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, had been representing the state for two terms. The feeling is now somebody from the state should get this seat. Chances of former state Minister Mohammad Ali Shabbir getting this seat are strong since he is said to be close to Congress Party general secretary and in-charge for Andhra Pradesh.

Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi has emerged as a rival to Dasari Narayan Rao. Incidentally both belong to the Kapu caste and have the same filmy background. While Chiranjeevi ruled the Telugu screen for over two decades Dasari has been directing films for long. Hence the race between the two celluloid aspirants will turn to be a suspenseful drama.

As for Telugu Desam, Dr Mysoora Reddy is leaving no stone unturned to get into Rajya Sabha for another term. There will be a tug-of-war between former Assembly Speaker Y Ramakrishnudu and present MLA N Narsimhulu for the second seat.

The picture is not clear when it comes to the CPI seat that will be vacated by Aziz Pasha. (INN)
