Chennai, January 22: A 12,000 strong police force in coordination with the Coast Guard will guard the city ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, even as police ruled out specific terror threats to Chennai.
“There is no specific threat but for a city of the size of Chennai, we have to be on guard. A total of 12,000 police personnel will guard the city for Republic Day celebrations,” Chennai City police Commissioner T Rajendran said.
With the celebration venue, the Beach Road, being located close to the sea, the Coast Guard will deploy its hovercraft for surveillance, Rajendran said adding preliminary security checks including checking of vehicles and hotels were on.
