Quota in legislatures: BC bodies plan demos

Hyderabad, August 03: Several BC organisations, including employees’ associations, in the state have decided to hold demonstrations in front of the Parliament on August 17 and 18 demanding 50 percent reservation for BCs in central and state legislatures. They would also demand reservation for BC employees in departmental promotions.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at BC Bhavan here today. Representatives of nearly 42 BC associations attended the meeting.

The delegation to Delhi, led by AP Backward Classes Association president R Krishnaiah, would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on August 19 and submit memorandums on their demands.

The delegation would also meet AICC president Sonia Gandhi, BJP leader LK Advani and other national leaders available in Delhi to pursue their cause.

Briefing newsmen here today, R Krishnaiah said despite several commissions recommending 50 percent reservation in Parliament and Assemblies to BCs, it was yet to be implemented in the county. Of the 40 recommendations made by the Mandal Commission only two have been implemented so far.
