New Delhi, November 10: A Strong earthquake struck west of India’s remote Nicobar Islands today, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The 6.2-magnitude quake hit at 8.48am (1.48pm AEDT) at a depth of 18km.
The USGS said the quake’s epicentre was 405km southwest of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an Indian territory which lies in the Bay of Bengal.
No tsunami warning was immediately issued.
The region is hit by frequent earthquakes caused by the meeting of the Indian plate and the Burmese microplate along an area known as the Andaman trench.
