Quake rocks Papua in Indonesia

Jakarta, June 16: A shallow strong quake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck Papua in the easternmost of Indonesia on Wednesday and a tsunami warning was issued, the Meteorology and Geophysiscs Agency reported.

The quake jolted at 10:16 a.m. Jakarta time (0316 GMT) with the epicenter 123 km southeast Biak of Papua and with the depth 10 km under sea bed, official of the agency named only Sujabar told.

The main shock occured only 10 minutes after a shock of 6.2 magnitude, he said. The agency issued tsunami warning, said Sujabar. An afterschock masuring 5.3 on Ritchter scale took place at 10: 38 a.m. Jakarta time (0338 GMT) with the epicenter 147 km southeast Biak and the depth 10 km under sea bed, he said. So far, there have been no reports of casualties and damage.
