Jakarta, Aug 14 : Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu’s hopes of securing a third World Championship medal were crushed after she lost her pulsating quarter-final match against eighth seed Sung Ji Hyun in their women’s singles event on Friday at Jakarta.
11th seed Sindhu suffered a 17-21, 21-19, 16-21 defeat against her Japanese opponent in a grueling contest that lasted over an hour and 22 minutes.
The 20-year-old had stunned China’s Olympic champion Li Xuerui in the pre-quarterfinals on Thursday to raise hopes of a third successive medal at the prestigious event.
Earlier in the day, the Indian duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were also bowed out of the competition after suffering a 23-25, 14-21 defeat against the unseeded Japanese pair of Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao in their women’s doubles event. (ANI)
