New Delhi, September 18: The renowned musician, Puttaraja Gavai, passed away at the Veereshwara Punyashrama in Gadag as per his last wish on Friday afternoon. He was 97.
The god of Hindustani classical singing was ailing for a while and admitted to a Belgaum hospital. He was shifted to Veereshwara Punyashrama in Gadag on his wish after he stopped responding to treatments.
The funeral will be held on Saturday noon in Gadag.
Pundit Puttaraja Kavi Gavai, who lost his vision in childhood, empowered the several disciples through his music.
Gavai’s phenomenal work in empowering physically challenged and destitute with music earned him status of living God and Padma Bhushan award from the Government of India.
He is always known for his exceptional talent and social reformer.
His demise is an end of era in Hindustani classical music. Samaylive mourns his death and prays “may god rest his soul in peace.”
