Punjab: Rape victim sets herself afire

Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab), July 26: A married woman, who was allegedly raped by two persons on June 21, has set herself afire at the house of her in-laws, police said on Saturday.

On the statement of the deceased’s father, the Badali Aala Singh police has registered a case under section 174 of CrPC and handed over the woman’s body to her parents.

The woman, a resident of Jarkhela Kheri village, was married 8 years back to a resident of Cholti village of the district and they had two children, police said.

On June 21, while she was returning from her parental home with her son, she was offered a lift in a car by two persons who took her to Ambala and allegedly raped her.

A case was registered next day in Sirhind police station on the basis of woman’s complaint, and the duo were later arrested.

They were sent to judicial custody.

After the incident, the woman was apparently upset and on Friday night when her family members were not present at house she set herself on fire.

She was taken to a civil hospital in Fatehgarh Sahib where she succumbed to her injuries.
