Punjab, Haryana receive light showers

Chandigarh, Dec 15: Most parts of Punjab and Haryana today received light showers, even as minimum temperatures rose by up to seven degrees above normal easing cold conditions here.

Chandigarh received 1.4 mm of rainfall followed by 1.1 mm at Rohtak, 0.3 mm each at Hisar, Karnal and Patiala and 0.6 mm at Bhiwani breaking the long dry spell in the region.

The rains will be beneficial for the standing wheat and other Rabi crops, agricultural experts said here. In the plains of Punjab and Haryana, Amritsar was the coldest with a low of 6.8 degrees Celsius, which was two notches above normal.

In Haryana, Narnaul settled at a low of 8.2 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal followed by 9.3 degrees Celsius at Bhiwani, two notches above normal and 9.7 degrees Celsius at Rohtak, three notches above normal. In Punjab, Ambala had a low of 10.6 degrees Celsius, which was four notches above normal, the minimum temperature at Ludhiana was 10.7 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal.

Patiala settled at 11.4 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal followed by 11.6 degrees Celsius at Chandigarh, five notches above normal, 11.7 degrees Celsius at Karnal, three notches above normal and 13.7 degrees Celsius at Hisar, seven notches above normal. The Met department has forecast mist or haze during morning and night at several places in the region.
