Punjab cop booked for demanding bribe

Ropar (Punjab), March 13: A police officer in Punjab’s Ropar district has been booked for demanding Rs.2 lakh as bribe for settling a case in complainant’s favour, police said Sunday.

The tainted officer has been identified as Balbir Singh, who is posted as the deputy superintendent of police (rural) here.

Ashwini Kumar, president of cooperative transport society, and seven others had given a written complaint to Ropar district police chief against Balbir Singh.

“As per the complaint, Balbir had demanded Rs.2 lakh as bribe from Ashwini to settle a long-pending case regarding some dispute of a truck union. After doing a preliminary investigation, we have booked Balbir,” district police chief Jatinder Singh Aulakh told IANS in Ropar, about 50 km away from Chandigarh.
