Pune may soon have police station for cyber crimes

Pune, January 14: The Pune city police are planning to set up an independent cyber police station in the city to efficiently crack down on the increasing number of cyber crimes.

With Bangalore and Hyderabad, two top IT hubs in the country, already having such specialised police station, the Mumbai police also launched a station at Bandra-Kurla Complex in suburban Bandra on May 30, 2009.

Cyber crime victims had to virtually run from pillar to post to lodge complaints. The city police have a cyber crime investigation cell that only probes cyber offences forcing the aggrieved parties to visit local police stations to file first information reports (FIRs).

The proposed dedicated cyber police station will entertain all complains related to cyber crime. Deputy commissioner of police (cyber crime cell and economic offence wing), Rajendra Dahale, said the Pune police commissionerate has sent the proposal to the home department.

“We plan to set up the station near Yerawada police station and it will be operate under one assistant commissioner of police, four inspectors and nine other officials,” he said. The Pune police have been training its personnel in cyber investigation and law since 2007.

According to the available data, cyber crime cases have increased from 5 in 2003 to 410 in 2010. The Pune cyber crime cell unit is headed by an officer of the rank of a deputy commissioner of police (DCP) and has one assistant commissioner of police (ACP), two inspectors, three sub-inspectors, an assistant inspector rank official and 15 constables.
