Pune to face 30 per cent water cuts

Pune, August 15: With dams supplying drinking water drying up day by day, the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations have decided to impose 30 and 20 per cent water cuts respectively from tomorrow.

A decision to this effect was taken following orders by Ajit Pawar, Water Resources Minister who is also Guardian minister of Pune.

“Last year by August 15, four dams that supply drinking water to Pune were filled up completely. As there is no sufficient rainfall this year, now only 70 per cent of the water is available in these dams,” Pawar said after holding meeting with officials here today.

Similar is the case with Pimpri-Chinchwad where the dams, which supply water to this region, were filled only up to 80 per cent, he added.

“Hence I suggested them to impose 30 per cent water cuts in Pune and 20 per cent water cut in Pimpri Chinchwad till the situation improves,” he said.

However, the authorities are not sure till how long the water cuts would continue.

“We will decide later till how long the water cut would continue,” said Mahesh Zagade, Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation.
