NEW DELHI: One of the most disturbing aspects of the February 14 terror attack was that the suicide bomber was a local, Adil Ahmad Dar, who lived in Gundibagh village in south Kashmir’s insurgency hotbed of Pulwama district.
The second of three brothers, Adil was a responsible kid who travels from house to house selling fabric, help out his mother, take care of daily affairs at home, said the father Ghulam Hassan Dar.
The father of the 20-year-old said that after Class 12, Adil took a course in religious studies and wanted to become a cleric.
“He wanted to become a cleric and had already memorized eight chapters of the Quran,” said his father. “When he was free, he would take odd jobs to make a bit of money for himself. In 2017, he earned around Rs 50,000-Rs 60,000 by making wooden boxes at a nearby saw mill.”
With a stoic face, Ghulam said the incident, which took place during his school days might changed him from the simple person he once was.

“Once he was returning from school when was detained by the men from the Special Task Force and asked to rub his nose on the ground. The men forced the boy to make a circle around their jeep with his nose,” Scroll quoted his father as saying. “Since then, he wanted to join the militants.”
“We are in pain in the same way the families of the soldiers are,” he said.
Dar’s mother Fahmeeda corroborated her husband’s account saying Adil was beaten up a few years back when he was returning from school. “He kept mentioning this incident again and again. This led to anger in him against troop,” she said.
“I desperately wanted him to quit militancy. We made many efforts but we were not successful,” said the mourning couple who were unaware of their son’s plan of attacking the CRPF convoy.
Though the family has not received a body, Dar’s funeral was performed on the night of February 14.
Also known as “Adil Ahmad Gaadi Takranewala” and “Waqas Commando of Gundibagh”, Adil joined the JeM last year, after dropping out from school.
A pre-recorded video of Adil was released just minutes after he carried out the dastardly attack.
This was the first suicide car bomb attack in Kashmir since the 2001 strike on Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in which 41 people, including three suicide attackers, were killed.
