Pulwama aftermath: Governor Malik directs forces to ‘avoid’ civilian deaths

SRINAGAR: Following the killing of seven civilians by security forces in Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik Tuesday instructed the security agencies operating in the Valley to follow strict guidelines to avoid incidents of civilian casualties.

Chairing a high-level security review meeting, Mr Malik reiterated the importance of the Army and all security forces strictly ‘adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to avoid incidents of civilian casualties and collateral damages’during anti-terror operations and recommended people-friendly measures during such operations.

The governor’s directions come after the killing of seven civilians, including two minors and an MBA graduate, when security forces opened fire on protesters after an encounter with militants on Saturday last.

Apart from the death of seven civilians and one security personnel, three terrorists were also killed in the encounter, which broke out on Saturday in Pulwama’s Monghama area of Sirnoo village.
