Pull up your socks, minister tells societies

Hyderabad, April 07: Minister for handlooms and textiles P Shankar Rao has directed the livery producing societies to speed up cloth production to deliver on time over 52 lakh uniforms, costing Rs 105 crore, ordered by the Rajiv Vidya Mission.

The minister has found that the production of suiting and shirting cloth is not up to the expectations. If the societies failed to complete the order by May first week, the remaining order would be cancelled, he said.

Addressing a press conference here today, Shankar Rao said Rajiv Vidya Mission had placed an order with the APCO for supply of 52,66,837 uniforms to students from Class I to VIII studying in government schools.

While the RVM was insisting on supply of uniforms latest by April 30, not even 50 per cent of the material was ready, he said. Hence, it was decided to extend the production plan up to April 15 so that the stitched uniform would be supplied by April 30, he said. The minister said alternative arrangements would be made by taking the cloth from powerlooms if the societies failed to deliver the order.
