Public, police clash during anti-encroachment drive

New Delhi, May 17: A demolition drive by Delhi Development Authority in a south Delhi locality triggered violent protests today, prompting police to use force to control the mob, officials said here.

The DDA team had gone to Jaitpur village this morning with a large contingent of police to carry out demolition of encroachment in the locality. The DDA had earlier announced that it will conduct a three-day demolition drive from today.

As the team reached the village, the locals prevented their entry by blocking the main road by placing trees on the middle of the road, they said.

The officials then got out of their vehicles and started walking but were confronted by angry protesters who asked the officials to halt the drive. Then the locals started shouting slogans against DDA and government.

As the team moved forward, some of the protesters pelted stones at them and their vehicles.
