Madhya Pradesh industries minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has blamed provocatively dressed women for moral corruption in society. Referring to the Guwahati molestation case in which a woman was abused, beaten up and stripped by a mob of over 20 men, he held women responsible for degeneration of society. “Women should dress in such a way that they evoke respect in others. Their fashion, lifestyle and conduct should be in accordance with the Indian culture. But, unfortunately women are dressing up provocatively, which is leading to deviation in society,” he said.
The incident had stirred the nation, as the video of the ghastly incident was widely circulated by the electronic media including internet. The incident even shook the central and state governments and orders were issued by both the government for action against the offenders but Kailash Vijayvargiya has a different opinion; he wants to know the intention of the victim and other women. He believes that such women lack respectful conduct.
The minister opined that if women have a respectful character and dress respectfully there will be not any problems in the society. The 56 year old minister of the Shivraj Singh Chauhan cabinet is known for his controversial remarks. These remarks of the minister are most likely to create storm among feminist circles.
