Protest over tribal’s death

Sangareddy, March 14: Tension prevailed at Sangareddy for a few hours on Sunday when tribals came in large numbers protesting over the death of a worker at Al-Kabeer company located at Rudraram in Medak district. They held dharnas and rasta rokos in the district headquarters.

One Chandu Naik, a casual labour in the factory, died under suspicious circumstances in the factory on Saturday, but the management did not reveal it till late in the night. While the family of Naik has been alleging that he died of accident, the factory management has been claiming that it was because of cardiac arrest. The family members were questioning the rationale behind furnishing the information at 10 p.m. though the incident took place at 3 p.m. Naik’s wife Vasanta has also been wondering why he was not shifted to the government hospital at Sangareddy and instead to a private hospital at Chandangar.

Seek assurance

Chandu Naik belonged to a tribal hamlet at Bommareddygudem in Pulkal mandal. Large number of tribals arrived at Sangareddy demanding that the management pay a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the family of Naik. They did not allow the doctors to conduct the post-mortem. When factory representatives – personnel officer P. Venugopal and HR manager Rahul – came there, the tribals stopped them demanding an assurance on compensation.

The tribals even held a dharna before the SP’s residence demanding justice and threatened to hold dharna in front of the factory with the dead body.

Finally, the police held discussions with the factory management and assured a compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh in addition to a job to the wife of the deceased. With the assurance the tribals withdrew their agitation.
