Proteas bow out of World T20 with easy win over Sri Lanka

New Delhi: South Africa signed from the World Twenty20 with a comfortable eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in their dead rubber contest here at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Monday.

Put in to bat first, Sri Lanka failed to capitalise on a good start provided by stand-in-captain Dinesh Chandimal (21) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (36).

Dasun Shanaka remained unbeaten on 20 as wickets kept falling at regular wickets which restricted Sri Lanka to 120 within 19.3 overs.

In reply, South Africa made a slow but steady start to chase down the target with 14 balls remaining. Hashim Amla scored unbeaten 56 and was involved in two crucial partnerships with captain Faf du Plessis (31) and AB de Villiers (20 not out).

South African spinner Aaron Phangiso was adjudged as the Player of the Match for his figures of 2-26.

The result means that South Africa finished third and Sri Lanka fourth in Group 1, with West Indies and England advancing to the semifinals from their group. (ANI)
