Prosecute Nirupama case in fast track court: NCW

New Delhi, May 04: National Commision for Women (NCW) has today asked Jharkhand government to transfer the journalist Nirupama’s case to fast track court.

NCW also asked the government to take action against other accused than her mother in this murder mystery, which is suspected to be an honour killing.

“We have told them (Jharkhand officials) clearly that culprits should be arrested and I am glad that at least one has been arrested. I just talked to them and said other perpetrators should also be arrested,” NCW Chairperson Girija Vyas told reporters outside Parliament.

Pathak, a Delhi-based journalist, was found dead on April 29 in her home in Koderma in Jharkhand. She was allegedly having an affair with her former IIMC, Delhi batchmate, a relationship her parents reportedly did not approve of because he was from a lower caste.

Expressing satisfaction over the arrest of Nirupama’s mother Sudha Pathak in the case, Vyas said, “I am glad that atleast one is arrested, other perpetrators, even those who are doubtful, should be arrested and the case should be transferred to a fast-track court.”

Nirupama’s father and brothers are also under scanner for their role in the case.

Stressing that the incident raised questions over the safety of women, she said, “if this can happen with this lady (journalist), then who is safe in this country.”

Asked what steps the NCW was taking to stop ‘honour-killing’ cases, its chairperson said, “we want to strictly implement the existing laws and make an atmosphere in the country from the panchayat level to cities that if anybody commits such a crime, a case should be registered against him with immediate effect and fast track courts should be there.”
